Our Visiting Expert

Savia Viegas holds a PhD in Satavahana Sculptural art from the University of Mumbai(2000).  In 2001 she along with her students undertook an empirical study of  nearly 16,000 visitors ofer a period of  six month to draw a visitor profile to the Museum.  In 2002 -2005 she single handedly conceptualized, and fleshed out a three-year degree course in Heritage management which was hailed as the first in Asia at an undergraduate level..  The same was introduced in two colleges at the undergraduate level.  She was awarded the Senior Fulbright Fellowship (223-2004) and did a residency at the George Washington University and the Smithsonion Museums to map visitor studies in the various museums under that banner.  In mid 2005-2007 she completed a project entitled “The Family Archive” under the aegis of the  Ministry of Culture, government of India.  Currently she is writing a book on the work of Goan painter Angelo da Fonseca  with a grant from the India Foundation for the arts.  website: http://www.saviaviegas.in/

Our Visiting Expert for the Historical Photography Restoration Week is Ms. Gisela Harich-Hamburger, Head of Foundation at the Conservation Center of Photography in Berlin.

Ms. Gisela Harich-Hamburger started as a positive retoucher and master craftswoman for reproduction processes. She has wide experience in the field of photography conservation and restoration across the globe. She has restored two life-size photographs of theLongkorn University in Bangkok and has worked as a photo conservator at the Art Library and Collection Photography of the Prussian culture possession in Berlin, Conservation projekt/glas plate negatives on behalf of DAI (German ArcheologicalInsitute) in Cairo (Egypt), and at the City Museum of Munich.

With the aim to promote public education to preserve the history and priceless memories and to create awareness on Photo preservation, conservation and restoration, Goa Center for Alternative Photography (Goa-CAP) in sponsorship with Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly known as the Prince of Wales Museum of Western India, Mumbai), Goethe-Institut/ Max Mueller Bhavan, Mumbai and Goa Chitra Museum, Goa, has initiated the ‘Historical Photo Restoration Week’.

We welcome you all and request you to kindly make it to the event. If you are a conservation practitioner or an enthusiast, please apply for a session to make a presentation or conduct a thematic session during the photography conservation symposium. You may also consider attending the ‘Fundamentals of Photograph Conservation workshop’.

General public is also welcome to bring in their favourite, important photographs or even the entire photo albums, which have got damaged, to know and learn to care and preserve these photographs in the right manner. There are no charges for the consultation.

You are also invited to attend a public lecture titled ‘Wanted: Conversation on Conservation’, by Ms. Gisela Harich, Head of the Center for Photo Restoration and Photo Research, Berlin.
